In the Name of Charity & the Cross

In the Name of Charity & the Cross explores the role of the Sisters of Charity, the Daughters of Charity, and the Sisters of the Holy Cross in the Civil War. Featuring items from the Catholic Theological Union; Historical Marker Database; Library of Congress; National Archives; Sisters of the Holy Cross; and the Smithsonian Art Museum, the exhibit includes seven images. Its purpose is to pay homage to the 600-plus Sister-Nurses who eased the suffering of the sick and dying during this bloody time in American history. Created as a final project for a Digital Humanities course at the University of Southern Mississippi, the exhibit showcases the charitable contributions of the Sisters of Charity, the Daughters of Charity, and the Sisters of the Holy Cross in the 1860s.
