About

About this Project:

The Angels of Mercy, Mission of Mercy, and In the Name of Charity & the Cross exhibits explores the role of Catholic Sisters in the Civil War. Featuring items from the Catholic Theological Union; Catholic University of America; Civil War Trails; Daughters of Charity, Province of St. Louise Archives; Find a Grave; Historical Marker Database; Library of Congress; National Archives; the North Carolina Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped; Sisters of the Holy Cross; and the Smithsonian Art Museum, the three exhibits include a total of fourteen images, one sound recording, and four pieces of text. The purpose of the exhibits is to pay homage to the 600-plus Sister-Nurses who eased the suffering of the sick and dying during this bloody time in American history. Created as a final project for a Digital Humanities course at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), the exhibits showcase the charitable contributions of the Sisters of Mercy, the Daughters of Charity, the Sisters of the Holy Cross, and the Sisters of Charity in the 1860s. Due to its educational and non-commercial nature, this project should qualify as fair use.

About Me:

I am a high school librarian who completed a graduate certificate in Archives and Special Collections at USM in May 2021. When I’m ready to retire from teaching, I envision a career move to an academic or religious library but am also open to other opportunities in archives that may present themselves at that time.
