Description

Wood engraving of three maritime panels in the May 9, 1863 issue of Harper's Weekly. The top panel shows the Union steamboat on the Mississippi River with the caption: The Naval Hospital "Red Rover." In the middle panel, "The Sister" monitors a soldier in a hospital bed. Identified as a member of the Sisters of the Holy Cross who served aboard the hospital ship in the Civil War, the Catholic nurse is pictured beside a waterside grave scene. On the right side of the middle panel is the "Convalescent Ward" of the ship, where five men are sitting and standing. The "Ward" makes up the bottom panel of the illustration with occupied hospital beds on both sides of the ship and another nun tending to a sick soldier.
